Assessment

Young carers have a statutory right to an assessment of their needs. They should be assessed as children and young people based on the wellbeing indicators, safe, healthy, active, nurtured, achieving, respected and responsible, included.

Young carers should be encouraged to express their wishes and needs when designing care plans or having discussions about issues which affect them. They have a right to be involved in decisions such as Community Care Packages for other family members if they are required to take on a caring role.

Getting it right for every child
Everyone's responsibility to ask the five questions:

  1. What is getting in the way of this child or young person's well-being?
  2. Do I have all the information I need to help this child or young person?
  3. What can I do now to help this child or young person?
  4. What can my agency do to help this child or young person?
  5. What additional help, if any, may be needed?
